About My Art

I'm creating large-scale relief prints from the cross sections of trees.

Like a fingerprint, each tree ring impression is unique and individual, revealing a rich natural history embedded in its growth. They hold a wealth of information not only about a tree's past but also that of the environment in which it lived.

Each print is hand pressed to transfer the information and beauty from the tree to paper.

What appears to be year rings at first sight starts taking different shapes and forms on closer observation, becoming entwined with the viewer’s own perceptions of the print. There are many stories the trees can tell us - and the stories we tell ourselves. My art builds the bridge, connecting these two worlds.

Let my art be a celebration of the beauty and mystery of the natural world in your home.

How It's Done

The original artwork is prepared and printed by hand.

The wood used for my art comes from salvaged trees. When I have found a suitable piece, I clean the surface from any debris, then sand it smooth and use different techniques, including burning, to make the tree growth rings become more exposed. Once the preparation of the piece is finished, I’m applying paint on the surface and laying the paper on top to transfer the image from the wood to paper. Sometimes I have to repeat all the steps to get it just right.

Once I get a perfect hand pressed print, it gets digitized and printed and framed by printing partners.

About the Artist

All Tree Ring Prints are created by Golden BC based maker Nicole Kadi Altküla.

I have been honing my skills in relief printing since the beginning of 2019.

Half of Estonia - my homeland - is covered by forest. That’s where my love for nature and trees blended with my lifelong passion for arts and crafts, bringing about a perfect manifestation of the union - the Tree Ring Prints.

My art is a balanced combination of minimalist black and white design and the rich natural beauty of nature. Each piece is handcrafted with care, celebrating the natural world, while giving new purpose to salvaged wood. Discover the unique beauty of tree rings and the stories they hold with my art.
